As humans move from an agrarian life to more urbanized areas, the connection with soil and plants is being lost with it. One side effect of this trend is that land-grant universities across the United States are doing away with their soil science departments. I was lucky enough to have been one of the last few undergraduates at the University of California, Riverside to study soil science as a a degree option. However, the appreciation for soils should not be limited to land-grant and agricultural universities. Thus I wrote an article for soil scientists to not forget that learning about soils has occurred and still occurs at America’s premier universities, the Ivy League.
